This program celebrates, in sound, the creative union of Shakespeare’s timeless words and the powerful voices of today’s composers. These composers have taken inspiration from Shakespeare’s words and have set them with great care, much as a jeweler works with precious metals to enhance the brilliance of a precious stone. Featured on this program are the Shakespeare Songs of Matthew Harris, plus the rarely performed Songs of Ariel by the Swiss composer Frank Martin.

Early November marks the convergence of several dates both civic and sacred. The Feasts of All Saints, All Souls and Veterans Day all share a common theme of remembrance. This program is a celebration of these days and of the ones who have gone before us marked with a sign of peace. Herbert Howells’ Requiem is the cornerstone of this program – a work that was written as release and consolation upon the loss of Howell’s only son. We will honor our loved ones during this program, with a balm only music can provide.

If one were to name the composer that stitches the seam between the Renaissance and the Baroque, it would likely be Claudio Monteverdi. So popular were his books of madrigals, a close friend of Monteverdi’s, Aquilino Coppini, replaced the secular texts with those of sacred verse. These works are charged with emotion – a sensuous world of passion and pain, original and innovative for the time and incredibly contemporary nearly four hundred years later.
